See if you have the prototype script ppp-on in /usr/sbin . If so, all you
need to do is add your personal information (number to dial, username and
password at the ISP, etc.) to it and you'll have a working command-line
interface to pppd.
If it's not there, check the PPP HowTo for the text of this short script.
