when doing make config say 'n' to;
IP: forwarding/gatewaying (CONFIG_IP_FORWARD) [Y/n/?]

However you are using Redhat, you can turn forwarding of in the file;
/etc/sysconfig/network
FORWARD_IPV4=false

With all distributions having the proc filesystem included in the kernel you
can turn off IP_FORWARDING in the file /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward (2.0.x)
and i belive it has the name ip_forwading in 2.2.x kernels altho i am not
sure.

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
