X-Windows Problems

I have a problem with X, I have Slackware 3.5, up and runing good, 
have no recompled the kernel yet,

I am trying to get X up and runing at 800X600 or some thing othere 
than like 640X480, I am runing a Creative Labs 3D Blaster PCI with 
a Verite 1000 Chip, And A Plug And Play Montior,  I am having to 
use the VGA16 server.

any idea how i can get it to 800X600, with out haveing to set my 
desktop bigger than my montior
