linux RedHat + Win-95 + Novell 4.11 + Internet + Mail, and more yet... :-)

that is it:

envyronment: Novell 4.11 with some win-95 clients. Today running a program
called "firedoor", which provides dial-up access to our ISP (and to
internet, btw) to all clients.

This will be my first experience with linux :-(

I am trying to convince the people here to install a linux RedHat 5.1 box,
with the following (intended) features:

a) dial-up on-demand to our ISP and give to everybody (internal) clients,
like it is today - think that it can be called a proxy

b) internal e-mail, enabling all clients to e-mail to the other (internal)
AND e-mailing to outside world thru the a.m. dial-up (on-demand) ppp.

c) e-mail from outside world should be addressed to our internal world,
preferably with some automated procedure. It is acceptable manual
"forwarding" of the outside mail - I can assume it, or our departamental
secretary can do it, but it is preferable some sort of "automation".

What I need from you:

a) personal feelings and hints and (if any) experiencies reports

b) pointing me out what faq's, how-to's, mini-how-to's to study

c) suggestion on free software to use for this

It is important to note that as I will be using a dial-up ISP connection
(no direct link), the proxy must be able to dial, authenticate, connect all
connections on-demand, disconnecting after a configurable time with no
modem activities. Also, it is convenient to have a "cron" script (sort of)
getting e-mail from the isp from time to time, for distribution

thank you very much for any tip.
