Gee that's real helpful... Read the docs... Truly in the spirit of the linux
commnunity... Maybe he was desperate for help / answers. Hell, maybe he is
just a newbie. Sure, the information was a bit sketchy, but I started out
asking questions like this. Fortunately for everyone here I couldn't get my
ppp going so I didn't bug you guys with these...
Well, for those who care, IP masqerading can be setup as follows.
First you need to recompile your kernel. Make sure you include Network
Firewalls, TCP/IP support, IP Forwarding, IP Firewalls, IP Masquerading and
if you need to be able to ping from '95 boxes, ICMP Masquerading. If you
need kernel re-compile help, mail me direct lest a holier than thou flamewar
should start :-)
Then you need to make sure that you have ipfwadm installed on your
machine... I know it comes with Redhat as a .rpm and I'm pretty sure it's on
slackware.... To enable other machines on your lan to browse the internet
through the Linux machines modem, you need to add the following two lines to
one of your init files (eg S99local or rc.local)
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
These lines assume that you have a lan using address' in the 192.168.0.x
range and wish to allow all machines to browse any IP address.
Restart the machine or just rerun the init file (or run a script containing
these lines) then connect to the internet...
You then just need to set your windows address' to the same range as your
Linux box and the gateway in your windows setup needs to be the IP of the
linux machine...
There's more to it than that, but it's a start... If you need more, there is
a howto on IP masqerading and some good sites.. If you need them, mail me
and I'll dig their URL's out.
