the character '*'  has to be escaped so your search command is
/\*\*\*\*\*

(same trick as with the shell)

How do I ask vi to search for the literal string `*****` (5 asterisks -

When I type `/*****` I get "RE error: Closure operator follows nothing."

I don't know how to override the special meaning of *.
