Hello, I had the same problem.. In my situation, X was configured to the highest resolution, and the lowest colour spectrum (8 bit). I was not much of an X-windows guy previous to Linux, so I edited the XF86Config file. You'll see a list of all the settings, just erase the ones you don't want and place the one you want as default as the first of configuration setting. Hope this helps.
