Jimmy,
You may have selected it in configure, but if you wanted it as a
module, then you would have to do a 'make modules' step to actually get
it built. Did you do that?
The acid test of whether your driver is active is to do a 'cat
/proc/filesystems'. If it shows up in the list, you are OK. If not, you
probably screwed up the build. You should, in that case, reread the
INSTALL file to see if you missed anything out.
