Periodically, the Linux boot sequence will do a check of the filesystems in
/etc/fstab using e2fsck . I forget the details, but lookto see exectly what
is being called. 

"Percent non-contiguous" reports the degree of filesystem fragmentation,
that is, the extent to which individual files are not stored in adjacent
blocks on the filesystem. 

"man e2fsck" (or maybe, on your system, "man fsck.ext2") for the details.
