It looks like pppd is waiting for the other end to do something, when it
shouldn't be. What do your ppp options look like (could be /etc/ppp/options,
or on the line that runs pppd from a script, or maybe somewhere else ...
depends on your specific setup)? Might you be waiting for the other end to
authenticate? I've seen that problem before, but here it's just a wild guess.
Also, remind us of the basics of your setup -- distribution/version, kernel
version, pppd version. Since you ARE connecting, a problem with the modem
device itself is unlikely ... but not impossible.
BTW, I noticed that this message was a response to my earlier suggestion #3.
I don't keep my outgoing mail in a form that's convenient to search. What
were suggestions 1 and 2, and did they not yield any useful information?
