tried
find -type d -exec ls -ld {} \;
?
You may be surprised how many directories you have.

It finishes whatever dir it was listing before it recurses, but it does
recurse.
Oh, ho! I see what you mean. -d prevents it from listing directory
contents, so it has nothinng to recurse.
