Not sure if I can help or not, but to have a chance I (or anyone else, I
imagine) need a clearer description of your problem. What is the "it" that
thinks "it" is busy? I assume the second "it" refers to the modem, but does
the first refer to the modem, the app that you are running to access the
modem (pppd? minicom? seyon?), or something else? How does "it" communicate
the information that "it" thinks the modem is busy? What do your logs show
about one of these unsuccessful connections?
It may be the kernel or it may be something else. How did you upgrade the
kernel? What distribution and version are you compiling it on? There are
issues about updating the ppp package, for example; did you do that?
P.S. I don't have a command "cu" on my systems. Is it something I'm
unfamiliar with or a typo?
