I got the source to util-linux-2.9i, compiled and installed it. If you
do it that way, it doesn't mess with init (the package includes
simpleinit, which is not meant for rh systems). I recommend you get the
source and read INSTALL.

This looks _wrong_. Getty should inherit uid 0 from init. Pam needs
that to get at the password database. Who is user 501? Can he login?
If I force an instance of getty to run as a nonroot user, that user can
login, all others fail...but then I don't get the (login) session
message for a failed login.
You may have to use the rescue option of an install boot.img/supp.img to
undo what you have done to yourself. :-)

That's just the process ID. I think that means the login is aborting.
You might check that /etc/pam.d/login is present and in good order, and
that nobody has eaten the various libpam's, and check /etc/shadow - does
RH use shadow? - or /etc/passwd.
