The info SuperProbe returns is about your video card. The horizontal and
vertical sync rates are a characteristic of your monitor. You need to look
in the documentation that came with your monitor to get this info -- to the
best of my knowledge, all modern (i.e., SVGA or better) monitors include
these numbers on the spec sheet.
I haven't seen a socket error 2 before, but I suspect it is another of those
unhelpful error reports -- telling you that some app cannot start because it
can't find the X server. You need to look earlier in the stderr output, to
find why the server itself isn't starting (possibly because you have hsync
&/or vsync wrong, causing the server to have no valid operating modes - this
happens a lot to beginners doing X setup).
As to the install error - did it really say "tqz" or is that a typo for
"tgz"? In any case, modutils contains these apps, plus associated
documentation (man pages) and a few odds and ends of source:
drwxr-xr-x root/bin 0 1998-02-23 15:28 sbin/
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 30184 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/insmod
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 23804 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/lsmod
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 7136 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/ksyms
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 32604 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/genksyms
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 22988 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/modprobe
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 15592 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/modinfo
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 10548 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/kerneld
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 1046 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/request-route
-rwxr-xr-x root/bin 25124 1998-10-11 21:41 sbin/depmod
None of this looks relevant to X to my eye, but I could be missing
something. (BTW, for future reference, go to the "Contents" directory of the
Slackware CD to get a listing of what is in each .tgz file.) For now, I'd
suggest you check if these apps are on your system and, if not, reinstall
them by hand - even if they are not important to an X install, some of them
are very important. (If you have real Slackware CDs, not cheapies, you can
just grab what you need from the "Live" directory tree. If not, use pkgtool
or install by hand.)
