Your question has three possible interpretations. I'll try answering all
three briefly -- feel free to request clarification on whichever is your
actual concern.
1. To *configure* X for multiple display sizes, you need to put the choices
in /etc/XF86Config . How you do this depends on which of the custom tools
for editing this file you choose to employ. If you use xf86config, for
example, you will get a list of resolutions to choose from. Edit them so
they include all the ones you want, with the one you want as the default
listed first.
2. If you *have* multiple resolutions listed in XF86Config, after you start
the X server, you change from one to the other with ALT-+ (ALT combined with
plus) & ALT-- (ALT combined with minus). Bear in mind that whatever you set
the screen resolution at, it will act as a "window" into a virtual desktop
that is the size of the highest resolution you have chosen (or even higher,
if you elected to use a larger virtual desktop during setup).
3. If you have done everything in (1) and (2) but are still not getting some
configured resolutions to *show up*, it may be that the conbination of your
video memory, vsync rate, &/or hsync rate will not support some resolutions.
To determine if some are being rejected by the server, look at the output
that startx writes to stderr (this can be redirected with a command like
"startx >xerrors 2>&1").
Hope this helps. Good luck.
