cd-rom can't read audio CDs

hey, can someone help.  I can use my ide cd-rom to read data CDs but i
can't get it to play any audio CDs.  The cd light just doesn't come on
when I try to play one.  I tryed to use the programs cdp and xplaycd.  I
also have win 98 on the same computer and cd audio plays fine.  Is this
a kernal problem?  Is there some other file-system I should of include.
What is the system call (if there is one) to play a audio CD.
