ok..maybe this would assist in prob # 2

try
smbclient \\\\MACHINE_NAME\\SERVICE  <flags, if any>

the reason for using so many slashes is so that you can
avoid confusing the shell with the \ slash, as alone, it is
used for breaking a line up on the shell prompt.
