The "Linux standard" and therefor the "proper way" is as follows.
cd /usr/src
rm linux
mkdir linux-2.2.2
ln -s linux-2.2.2 linux
tar xzf linux-2.2.2.tar.gz
cd linux/Documentation
less Changes
Pay attention to the section;
Current Minimal Requirements

If your system complies then do;
cd ..
less README
Follow what is written and make your new kernel.
