Just based on a quick overview of what you sent, I see several possible
problems.
But first: when you say you "have no response", what exactly do you mean?
Does the server's modem not answer the phone, does it answer but not get to
the login: prompt, or does logging in not run successfully run ppp? I can
see a *possible* problem at each stage, based on what you sent. Below, I've
suggested the most likely problem at each step, but I haven't tried to cover
all the possibilities.
If this advice doesn't get you running, next time be more specifici about
where the attempt fails and I'll try to be more detailed about that stage of
the connection process. For now ...
1. Have you set the server's modem to auto-answer? This is done with an AT
command (I think ATA, but check your modem manual to be sure), followed by
doing whatever your modem requires (it varies) to save the active profile in
non-volatile RAM.
2. Do you have s *tty* process watching ttyS1? If not, the modem will still
answer the phone (assuming it is set to), but the host computer won't make
use of the modem line. This requires an entry in /etc/inittab that looks
something like:
s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 ttyS1 vt100
(My example is from lackware 3.5; RH is probably a bit different - in
particular, you are likely to be using a different *tty* app.)
3. Neither end of the ppp negotiation is setting ip addresses. The server's
pppd call needs to include something like this: 192.168.42.4:192.168.1.23
(server-end ip address:client-end ip address). You may be missing other
parameters as well; when I used to run a ppp server, pppd was invoked with
this string (all on one line):
/usr/lib/ppp/pppd passive modem proxyarp auth login +pap
192.168.42.4:192.168.42.23
So ... I hope some of this helps. If not, and if you are getting any
response at all from the server end, take a look at your logs
(/var/log/messages, usually) and see what is happening. Also, see if you can
connect from the client to the server using minicom and, if not, why.
