One other consideration: by saying xset fp= blah, you are telling X to
stop using the font paths specified in XF86Config, and use only the font
path in the xset. If it can't find it's default font there, it will
give the message you quote. I couldn't get it with Type1, but I managed
with PEX. But I just have the default Type1 that comes with X.
I think you probably want xset +fp or fp+, or just add a FontPath line
for it in XF86Config.
