Best Data makes both kinds -- HSP modems ("Winmodems") and real modems.
According to the list at URL http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/19990423b.html, the
PCI modems are HSP (almost every PCI-bus modem is HSP, BTW), while the one
isa modem is real.

If you bought one of the PCI models, go back to the store and ask the sales
person *how* to make it work with Linux (or, more realistically, get a
refund and a more appropriate product - the above URL will tell you a large
number of modems that DO work with Linux).

If you do have the isa model ("Model 56SPS/SF/SVF, Smart One 56K"), it
either came with a disk that provides a configuration program or (more
likely, these days) is PnP. If the latter, look to the Plug and Play HowTo
(probably in your /usr/doc directory somewhere, or at URL
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Plug-and-Play-HOWTO.html) for instructions
on how to use isapnp to set it up.
