The best lead I've been able to come up with is this URL -
ftp://ftp.pdb.sni.de/pub/utilities/misc/hpdj.html
It is the source fo the "hpdj" driver, which the page says works with a 540.
The page also says this driver is distributed with S.u.S.E. and Debian, but
Slackware 3.6 doesn't seem to include it ... so it goes ... it's getting
harder and harder to be a loyal Slacker <sigh>.
For future reference, a starting point for printer questions is the *online*
version of the Print HowTo (at metalab), which includes a link to the
"Printing HOWTO Support Database" at URL
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi .
But that said, please don't hesitate to ask for help on this list. If there
is a more basic list around, I don't know about it (though some more
advanced topics do get discussed here as well as true beginner questions).
