One question -- does this always happen or only sometimes?
I ask for this reason: there are two distinct headers in e-mail messages --
>From and From: (yes, they do differ only by the colon). From is created by
sendmail (or your MTA if different) and is supposed to be the *real* source
of the message. It serves as the message separator line for every e-mail
client I'm familiar with. It doesn't show in mail clients (unless no From:
header is present).
From: is the header that shows on-screen and can be whatever you want (that
your MTA can and will send), in your case presumably the virtual domain.
>From sendmail's point of view,it is part of the content of the message.
Inconveniently, some mail clients use the From header rather than the From:
header (or even Reply-to:, if set) when replying to a message. This caused a
problem for me a couple of years ago, when I was setting up a system that
let a Web server send automated e-mail responses to requests -- some replies
went to [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
. I never found a way to fix this in that context. (I think my problem was
with some widely-used Microsoft mail client, but it was too long ago for me
to be sure.)
I'm not sure if the mail clients that work this way are in violation of the
SMTP standards. Does anyone know?
