these days there is possibly 2 compilers on your system:
gcc and egcs.
both able to compile C and C++ among other things, if these langages have   
been installed for each of them. that means that you may have installed   
only C for gcc and C, C++ for egcs, or the opposite ...

gcc is the stable C compiler
egcs is a developpment version (could mean less stable but i read   
somewhere that it would merge with gcc again).

glibc is the library that every program uses (most system functions are   
implemented in it), it will be used with both compilers.

your problem for the moment)
