bash (if you use bash) uses a different initialization script for login
shells than for interactive shells (xterm), which might set the PATH
where it looks for commands differently.   What these are named might
vary somewhat by distro, but man bash should tell you in the FILES bit
near the end.

Even with runlevel 5, there should be a getty on tty6, which you can get
to with control-alt-F6.  Oops, at least in RedHat 5.0, there were
getties on tty1-6 for runlevel 5.  I tried shutting down from inside xdm
once, just to see.  It looked kind of funky, but it doesn't seem to have
done any harm.  Linux is remarkably robust. :-)
