Let me give you the answer everyone in IT gives when asked a question:
'It Depends'  ;-)

If the modem is 'winmodem' it won't work.  What that means is that much of
the modem 'guts' are moved from the chip in the modem itself to the
OS(really stupid, if you ask me.  That's the kind of thing that forces you
to upgrade you're whole computer everytime the evil empire releases a new
version of WinDuhs).  A quick way to tell if it's a winmodem is that if
your PC seems to 'stutter' a bit when it starts up under Winduhs, it may be
a Winmodem.
Another way to find out is to simply try it!   If it won't work, new modems
are pretty cheap. Take a look at the Modem and PPP howTos at Linux.org for
a good 'getting started' guide.
