You don't need to be a full-fledged programmer to do this yourself, just a
bit familiar with shell scripting. Here are the relevant lines from the (now
ancient) script I once used for a related purpose:
To log the start of a connection:
echo "login `/bin/date` $2 `tty`" >> /var/adm/logins
To log the end of a connection:
echo "logout `/bin/date` $2 `tty`" >> /var/adm/logins
In both, the $2 was a shell variable that held the userid, but for your
purposes you can skip that part. Just add your variant on the first line to
ppp-on, the second to ppp-off . This isn't perfect -- it will overestimate
connect time by a bit, and anyway it approximates the time the ppp0
interface is active, not the time the phone line is in use -- but it may
tide you over until you develop the skill to write something better.
