There are two scripts (ip-up & ip-down) that pppd runs when it
goes up or down. So you could just get ip-up to run date +%s to give you
the time you connected in seconds since 1/1/70 and do the same thing in
ip-down to give you the time you disconnect. Then you just work out the
difference.
I've just upgraded to pppd 2.3.8 and noticed that it tells you how
long ppp was up in minutes and also how much data was transferred :)
