Okay let's assume that you've just downloaded the latest wiz-bang
just can't live without it piece of software. The file is called
"wiz-bang.tar.gz", (which has everything in the directory /wiz-bang) and
it is in /home/darryl/download

Step 1 - You must unpack the archive somewhere. I like to put everything
I download into /usr/local/src ...
        cd /usr/local/src
        tar -zxvf /home/darryl/download/wiz-bang.tar.gz

This will then give you: /usr/local/src/wiz-bang

Step 2 - Change to the newly made directory and read any documentation...
        cd wiz-bang
        ls (look for README's INSTALL's *.txt's etc)

For arguments sake lets suppose that this package's installation
instructions are in a file called README...
        less README

>From here on it's just a case of following the instructions in the
documentation. It usually (but not necessarily) goes along the following
lines...

Step 3 - Configure the package for compiling...
        ./configure

Step 4 - Compile the package...
        make

Step 5 - Install the package...
        make install

But what if...

What if the package was wiz-bang.tar.bz2 ...
You would use tar -xvyf /home/darryl/wiz-bang.tar.bz2

What if the package was wiz-bang.tar ...
You would use tar -xvf /home/darryl/wiz-bang.tar

For further information...
        man cd
        man tar
        man ls
        man less
        man gzip
        man bzip2
