The kernel tests your hardware on bootup. To see what the kernel found,
run dmesg (this shows you the bootup messages).

If you've got just a small network, I wouldn't bother using WINS, at
least not right now. It just puts extra complexity into things.
Your addresses/netmask sound OK and TCP/IP is all you need if you aren't
running WINS (which requires netbios/smb). When you test, be sure to
ping by IP address to cut name resolution out of the issue.
