Based on the command list it is giving you, I'd say the problem is that it
is getting a command it does not recognize not from your command line, but
from the POP3 server you have it connecting to.
I don't know fetchmail in any detal, but you might see if it is logging the
objectionable command to /var/log/messages (or wherever you have syslogd
writing messages to). Try running it in verbose mode (the -v flag); that
should cause it to display the objectionable command (all the commands,
actually).
