The XFree86 cardlist (http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html) includes 5
different Diamond Viper cards, using 2 different X servers. Either server
should support resolutions other than VGA (if you mean by VGA 640*480 in 16
colors, as delivered by the VGA16 server). It says the V550 uses the SVGA
server.
So ... just what you do depends on details you haven't included in your
question. One approach is to run xf86config, specifying the SVGA server and
answering the other questions it asks appropriately. When it asks you to
pick resolutions, reorder them so the one you want is listed first; that's
the one startx/xinit will default to (the first *valid* one for your
hardware, that is). Other options are to run XF86Setup or XConfigurator, if
you have them ... but I alwsys use xf86config so can't give you the details
for these alternatives.
If you can't get resolutions above 640*480 to work, the limitation is either
in your monitor's hsync or vsync range, or in your video card's memory
(other things are possible too, but these are the usual suspects). Or you
may have an outdated version of the X package; many Linux distributions,
excepting only the very newest versions, are out of date on this. The
current one, downloadable from the XFree86 site, is 3.3.3.1 . I don't know
how recently support for the Viper550 was addded.
That's about all I can tell you without more info on your exact setup. If
you need more, take a look at the docs at the XFree86 Web site
(www.xfree86.org). Good luck; hope this helps.
