You sacrifice one primary partition, for an extended one, that can hold
many partitions

Yes, if you use an extended partition.
For example:
Partition 1: Windows
Partition 2: Windows
Partition 3: Extended partition
Partition 4: Linux system
Extended, part 1: Linux user data
Extended, part 2: Linux swap
and so on.

If I remember right, the bootable partitions cannot be in the extended
partition, but I might be wrong here.

Max size of linux swap is 128Mb.
I'm not sure about man number of linux swap partitions (or files, for this
