To quote from the README:
LIL- The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/map without running the map
installer.
That doesn't help much, does it? If the rescue disk you mentioned is a
canonical lilo boot floppy, with lilo, the map file, and the kernel
configured and installed on the floppy, the only ways I know of to get
this are a defective floppy, or a BIOS boot order of C: A: or however
your BIOS calls them.
If I read you right, you have not installed lilo on the mbr, and can
still boot dos? OOPS, the linux partition is active, and lilo is
injured. You may have to boot dos from a floppy, rawrite a new
linux install floppy, and use it to start your linux system by hitting a
shift key to get a lilo prompt, and typing the image name and
"root=/dev/<whatever>".
