With so little detail, all I (or anyone, really) can offer is wild guesses.
Instead, let me suggest what you might do to try to pin down the problem
yourself. Even in this, I'm making some assumptions about how you are
connecting to your ISP - apologies in advance if I'm guessing wrong.

1. Check your log (usually /var/log/messages and /var/log/debug) to see what
pppd and chat are saying about a connection attempt.

2. Compare the command-line switches and options file for pppd that you're
using now with the ones you were using in Slack 3.4 to see if anything is
different. (Just where to look can vary, but on my Slack 3.5 system, the
places would be /usr/sbin/ppp-on and /ets/ppp/options).

3. Check your routing. Is the link to the ISP set up as the default route?
To find out, run "route -n" and see what default route is listed. Also make
sure infocnfig lists the ppp0 interface as installed and running.

4. Do you have your ISP's nameservers listed in /etc/resolv.conf? You don't
say if lynx and Netscape are failing on lookups by IP address, by hostname,
or both, so I don't know whether this might be your problem.

5. Once you are connected to your ISP, can you ping a host at the ISP? (Ny
hostname? by IP address?).

If none of these get you anywhere, follow up here with a more detailed
message. Include your pppd startup script, your chat script, your ppp
options file, the log entries from a connection attempt, the output of
ifconfig, the output of route, your /etc/resolv.conf file, and the EXACT
hostname you try and the EXACT error message you get (the one you included
below is probably preceded by an appname, then a colon - we'll want to know
what process is reporting the error).
