Depends on what you mean by exactly. I use cpio for my backups, and have
even used it to move a Windows install from one disk to another (backup to
nfs, put new disk in, restore from nfs). It works without a problem, the only 
thing you have to do afterwards is boot from floppy and "system c:". 
(I always put a small Linux partition on every computer I come across.
Simplifies stuff like this enormously).
