I think there is a penguin with one of the distros. Mandrake? I reckon
the whole thing is kind of frivolous, and there are linux systems that
don't run with no downtime from one year to another... but windows has
one. That's one of the reasons I don't run windows.

But just as a hack, I made a copy of lockvc.c, naming it logo.c, cut out
all the locking code and options, and added a target to the makefile to
link logo static, so it'll run before the dynamic libraries are set up.
Put a fork() in it so it wouldn't hang up the rc's and put in
/etc/rc.d/rc.S (this is slackware, RH calls it rc.sysinit), right after
/sbin/swapon -a
/sbin/update

/usr/local/bin/logo

and, clutching my trusty rescue floppy, rebooted. BIOS and kernel
bootup are still as they were, but then feuer broke out on my screen.
It could as easily been the linux shark, or starfield, or morph. It
needs some polishing before I turn it loose: it took over tty2, and I
had to logon as root on another tty and kill it to get tty2 back. Then
the getty got all its input, including ^c that I thought surely should
have stopped logo. Should I have it sense when the first loginn is
offered and terminate? Or should it keep the getty off its tty somehow
and wait for a key? If you'd like to mess around with it, you can get
lockvc at metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/console/lockvc-3.6.tgz, and I
can make up a patch to what I guess _might_ be the pre-pre-beta of 3.7.
