At install time you are asked to assign "/" to a device, the device being
the designated linux partition(s) which were created by fdisk under your
instructions.

The install askes you to define the place (device) by saying something like;
Where do you want to install the "root filesystem" which is the "/"
directory, it will also show you the possablitys like;
/dev/hda1

you assign /dev/hda1 to /
basicly thats it.

There are other possablitys like assigning /dev/hda2 to /usr for example.

I suggest that you read the following HOWTO which should be on the cdrom
located in;
/doc/HOWTO/Installation-HOWTO

Goto section 6.6.2 and read on from there, that explanes what i am saying
in my statement above in much more detail and gives very good examples.

I have no knowlage of that BIOS.

I would install lilo on the MBR, just a small note here, when partitioning
large drives, (more than 512Mb) it is adviseable to create /dev/hda1 within
the 1023 cyls boundry, doing so will eliminate (or should eliminate)
problems with LILO and large drives.

Read (cdrom) doc/HOWTO/mini/LILO for more details on that.

Reading is realy the best thing to do first, you can of course ask
unanswered questions to me or the list after you have read and digested
all of the files mentioned above.

Just a small footnote,
You say you have installed linux and got the "Congrats" message but you cant
boot, you could use the "rescue floppy" as follows to "try" to boot linux.

place the floppy in the drive of course,
start the machine,
at the prompt type;

mount root=/dev/hda1 ro

Where /dev/hda1 is where your "root filesystem" is situated.

If you are succsesfull in booting, the HOWTO's are located in /usr/doc/*
You could then edit /etc/lilo.conf if it is there, if not create it and
follow the examples given in the LILO mini-HOWTO and rerun lilo to install
it on the MBR.

I am quite sure others will comment on your questions as well.
Hope this all helps.
Good luck.
