Suggestion one: use the Subject: line when you send e-mail. It's courteous
to do so, and sometimes even helpful.

Suggestion two: for the NIC, you need to install the appropriate module,
then either have it probe for the card or instruct it as to where the card
is. All the details are NIC specific, so either look up your card in the
Ethernet HowTo or tell us its make, model, IRQ, and IO port, so someone here
can give you some meaningful advice.

Suggestion three: for the printer, check in the boot messages (use "dmesg"
or check your log file, probably /var/log/messages) to see if the kernel is
finding your parallel port. If not, you need to add the "lp" module. If it
is, see if it is located at lp0 or lp1 (distributions vary on this, and I
don't know Caldera well enough to know this). If it is there, see if you can
simply dump a text file to it with a command like "cat somefile >/dev/lp0"
(or lp1, as appropriate). Don't worry if the file prints *well*; you want to
see if you get *any* response from the printer. If you do, consult the man
pages for lpd and printcap to see how to set up the line-printer daemon
system to find your printer. If this doesn't all work, let us know what you
did and how it failed (including *exect* error messages, not approximate
wordings), and maybe someone here will be able to spot the problem.

Suggestion four: don't bother tellng us you can't install "etc". No one here
can help you with such a vague request for help. If there are other things
you can't install, do tell us about them, but be specific - including
telling us what you tried and what the results were, not just that you failed.

Suggestion five: After all of this, I do want to encourage you to write
again, but this time with questions specific enough that they can be
answered, by me or by someone who knows more about the specific areas you
need help in. You will need to allow for the fact that there isn't (as far
as I've seen) much Caldera-specific expertise on this list - most of us seem
to use Red Hat or Slackware. So you'll get general Linux advice mostly, not
help specific to the special configuration tools that Caldera has.

Oh yes, HowTos - they are probably on your CD somewhere, probably installed
on your system somewhere (look in /usr/doc), and definitely available at URL
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/ (the Web versions often are more current than
the CD ones).
