Linux needs at least a 386 to run. And, if I recall correctly, at least 4
megs of RAM. For such minimal systems, I'd look either at Slackware (which
has a greater range of install options for old, weird hardware than the
other majors) or some of the "tiny" Linux distributions that fit on a few
floppies (e.g., Trinux, "monkey" Linux ... check in "distributions" at the
metalab ftp site).
Only word processor I can think of that runs without X (an old system like
your friends have won't run X) is joe, a Wordstar-3.3-like app.
