You have to be very lucky and very quick to start pppd from minicom.
Also you have to have minicom set up for 8N1 in the serial port
settings. I am not real expert in this, but I would say minicom has
served its purpose: you know you can dial out and log in to the ISP.
Go ahead to the section where you set up chat to do it automatically.

This is also what you get if you type ifconfig when you're not connected
to anything. Or the first line you get if you are. That's just the
127.0.0.1 localhost
in /etc/hosts.
