Linux can be anywhere. To boot an hd with lilo, the BIOS must be able
to get at everything lilo needs: /boot/boot.b, /boot/map, and any
kernel images. That doesn't sound like a very big drive. Probably you
can get into setup and choose an "LBA" mapping so the BIOS can get at
the whole thing in 500 cylinders with 64 or 128 or 256 heads or so. If
you can, you will still have to boot linux once from a floppy to
reinstall lilo. Also, lilo should have told you it had a problem when
you installed it, if this _is_ the problem. (Some of lilo's abort
messages are a bit low key, but ignore them at your peril).
You did install lilo?
lilo &>oops
and send us oops, or at least read it :-) Also /etc/lilo.conf, and your
setup.
If you really do have a 1024-sector problem, the easiest solution is
usually to make a small partition for /boot, and install all kernel
images there. By default, lilo installs the files it needs during
bootup in /boot.
