Well, the problem I was having installing SuSE 6.1 has now been solved and boy do I feel dumb (well, at least sheepish). Turns out that I had written down the wrong kernel specs (old electronics techs keep written journals for everything) when I did the first 5 installs. Don't rember anyone putting anything funny in my coffee ;-)). You people with mixed systems (EIDE & SCSI) pay attention. It seems you can't use the eide01 kernel if you have SCSI drives in your system, even though the boot device is IDE. It still doesn't make sense to me but at least it works! my lilo.conf: # LILO Konfigurations-Datei # Start LILO global Section boot=/dev/hda #compact # faster, but won't work on all systems. read-only prompt timeout=500 vga = normal # force sane state # End LILO global Section # image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/hda1 label = linux Thanks to those who responded. Even though those answers didn't solve this problem, they gave me other things to think about and look into.
