I did a bit of searching and found this site that discusses the limitations
(for Linux purposes) of the PPA printer protocol:

http://www.httptech.com/ppa/

The software page at this site includes the following:

"pbm2ppa 0.8.6 (formerly print-pbm) is a utility designed to work with
Ghostscript. It takes a series of PBM files output by Ghostscript and
creates the PPA stream to print the pages. This version works with the 720,
820, and 1000 series printers, though testing is still encouraged and welcome!"

Don't know if this will help you or if the use of Ghostscript will
complicate your life too much, but at least this is something to try. Sorry
I don't have better news for you on this front.
