The printer database for Linux list a a dozen or so Brother printers, using
a variety of drivers. I didn't see an "HL-VeL" on the list, but perhaps
there's a slightly variant model number that matches. Take a look at URL

I don't know what formats are "similar" to Postscript, so it's hard to say
much about that part of your message. To get Postscript itself working,
you'll neee a suitable ghostscript filter. I didn't check if one is
available for that printer; you can do so yourself as URL
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ .
If all you need is text printing (I'm not sure which way to read your "What
I need ..." sentence - do you mean you need *some* format working or *all*
formats working?), you might try adding a "generic" entry to printcap and
see if that works -- something along this line:
generic:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lpgeneric:sh
(making sure to create the spool directory specified). If dumping directly
to the device (I assume you're using something like "cat somefile
>/dev/lp0") works, this should as well (with the command "lpr -Pgeneric
somefile").
Also, some miscellany: check that lpd is running; check using lpq to see if
the files are vanishing or sitting in the queue; make sure the filter
specified in your printcap is actually there; make sure that the spool
directory is actually there; check your logs for error messages from lpr or lpd.
