I had tried the force, the oldpackage and everythig I could find in the
manual pages.

I thought I already posted my solution to the problem on here, but just
in case it didn't get posted here is how I solved the problem.

I started up KDE and used the rpm program in that.  Don't have the name
handy but it was a glint type program and took the ugly 0.99.xxx off
with no problem.
