How did you install X? It sounds like you provided a video mode that your
card &/or monitor doesn't support. Beyond that, there's not much to say
without knowing the details of your X installation -- what X server you are
using, how you configured X (xf86config, XF86Setup, XConfigurator, something
else ...), what resolution the screen is initializing (and having problems)
at (640*480, 800*600, 1024*768, etc.), what bit depth (8 bpp, 16 bpp, etc.)
what video card and how much video RAM, and the hsync and vsync of your monitor.
If you used xf86config, you entered most of this stuff by hand, so you can
double check that the values you provided match what your equipment actually
has. If you used one of the "helpful", partly automated systems, you don't
know, and you'll have to look in /etc/XF86Config for them. Or you can run X
with the command
startx >/tmp/xerrors 2>&1
to put the stsrtup report in a file that you can read after you quit X.
Havng given you all of that general guidance, let me mention that I had a
problem similar to what you describe once (not the Xbill part; just the
display messiness). It occurred because I was trying to run 800*600 on an
old monitor that could only support 640*480 due to hsync or vsync (I forget
which) limitations.
PS - I don't know what "When I startx, Another Level starts, which is fine"
means.
