Why couldn't you unmount it?  What was the error?

A couple of possibilities:

-kmod died (unlikely, but it would stop the kernel loading any modules)
-your modules got nuked (quite possible - if you upgraded the kernel from
  any sort of package manager it may have nuked your old kernel and
  modules)

If everything is fine when the box boots, I wouldn't worry about it.
