ifconfig -a will show your ppp connection _if_ active.
modem is busy sounds like you have
1) other software access the modem, like minicom and kppp going at the
same time.
2) wrong com port settings, you have it set to com 1 and your modem is
on com2.
3) you are already connected
4) there is a stale modem lock file somewhere on your system (Ussually
/var/lock/)
