Well ... what do you mean by "converted"? Did you change the symlink /dev/modem to point to /dev/psaux ? Did you tell X (by way of xf86config or your preferred X config app) that you had a new mouse? (For that matter, do you have X using the /dev/mouse symlink or does it point directly at the serial port used by the erstwhile serial mouse?) Those are the basic steps you need to take in Linux, after you make the physical chance of mouse. If you didn't reboot, you might want to do that, just to see that the kernel sees the PS2 mouse. If it doesn't, make sure the PS2 mouse port is turned on in your BIOS.
